2025 Summer Placement Vacancy for Undergraduate Civil / Structural Engineer
This is an opportunity to work in a well-established award-winning consulting engineering practice specialising in building conservation. Our office is in Appleby, Cumbria. There are three Engineers in the practice and we always take on placements in the summer. Our project base includes new work and repairs to bridges, scheduled monuments, churches, castles, and traditional buildings located throughout the North of England, Wales and Southern Scotland. Important historic structures we are working on include Newcastle Cathedral, Towneley Hall in Burnley, Whorlton Suspension Bridge over the Tees and Maidens Way Coal Drops in Gateshead, all of which are of national importance.
This opportunity is to join a small team of Engineers to assist in inspecting historic structures and buildings, carrying out measured surveys, followed by structural analysis. You will also prepare drawings in Vectorworks for new construction projects, attend site meetings with opportunities to interface with clients and contractors.

Appleby is a small town on the Settle to Carlisle railway and within easy reach of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks. Your own transport would be an advantage but not a requirement.
We are offering an interesting, stimulating and varied opportunity; in previous years placements have had involvement in up to twenty different projects!
The position is based in our Appleby office. We will pay a salary of £25,000 pro-rata for the summer period, length to be agreed. Accommodation is available locally.
Apply by email to engineering@blackett-ordconservation.co.uk with a cv and an explanation of why you are interested in a placement in engineering conservation.
