Appointment of Civil / Structural Engineer
We are a well established consulting engineering practice specialising in building conservation. The head office is in Appleby in Cumbria, with a second office in Liverpool. There are four engineers in the practice, (two CARE accredited). Charles, Emma and Amy are based in Appleby and Ian in Liverpool. The practice’s project base includes new work and repairs to cathedrals, bridges, scheduled monuments, churches, castles and listed and traditional buildings located throughout the North of England, North Wales and Southern Scotland. Important historic structures we have recently completed work on include the Dunston Staiths in Gateshead, Backbarrow Ironworks in Cumbria, Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland and Bennerley Viaduct in Nottinghamshire, all of which are of national importance.
Currently we are working on two conversions of churches to residential accommodation, the Chinese Pavilion at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Bridgewater site, Shildon Coal Drops in County Durham and Wrexham Football Museum. We are involved in providing conservation consultancy on Whorlton Bridge over the Tees and Temple Mill in Leeds.
This opportunity is to join the team of Engineers to assist in investigating defects in historic structures and buildings, and in the structural design of new interventions in historic structures, where we work with established conservation architects.
This is a permanent position in an established practice. The new appointee should be Chartered (ICE or IStructE) or near Chartered. Currently the engineers work full time in the office in Appleby but some home working can be discussed. Staff are typically out of the office on visits for 1-2 days a week.
You must be observant and pay attention to detail, have an interest in the historic environment and preferably have some knowledge of engineering and architectural history. The position includes travel throughout the North of England so independent transport is essential, (mileage is paid). You will also prepare technical drawings in Vectorworks and write reports and specifications.
You must be familiar with design principles and Eurocodes in all the main structural materials, and be literate and fluent in report writing. A degree class 1 or 2.1 is expected, with an objective to become CARE Accredited. As this is a permanent post, ambition to progress within this specialist field is expected, and for which we provide training and CPD.
This position is based in our Cumbria office. The workload is very varied and always interesting. The salary will be competitive.
